The Newberry Pistol Club Junior Sharpshooters are looking for participants in their Junior Rifle Instruction program. They are seeking boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 20 to participate. The program is fun and free. Parents will be asked to participate in certain activities. There is a set of rules that all participants and parents will be asked to read, acknowledge and abide by. Also, parental permission must be granted along with a medical permission to treat. All these forms will be made available to those wishing to participate.
Participants will learn and be instructed in: firearm safety, sportsmanship, character, discipline, marksmanship, range procedures and responsibility. The program is being run by four NRA appointed rifle coaches with experience in junior instruction. Those participating will have the opportunity to operate and fire Daisy match grade BB guns, Daisy sporter air rifles, precision Olympic grade air rifles, small bore .22 Cal rifles and center fire rifles. The opportunity is present for those wishing to enter competition. In past years Newberry Pistol Club Sharpshooters teams competed in local, state and national matches. Match competitions on the firing line normally last 90 minutes requiring extreme mental concentration and discipline. Parents where else can you get your child to stand still for 90 minutes?
Obtaining national ranking as an individual competitor is not unattainable. Extreme athletic skills are not necessary. You do not have to be able to run fast, jump high or lift a lot of weight. The sport does however require hard work, discipline and concentration.
Parents of past participants have noticed improved concentration and problem solving skills in their children. Since keeping a rehearsal log is required, younger participants' math and spelling skills improve. Perhaps the largest benefit derived from participating in the program is that of safety with firearms. Children are also instructed what to do should they encounter an unattended firearm.
The Newberry Pistol Club Junior Sharpshooters rifle program is associated with the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting (the Olympic governing body), American Legion, Gun Owners of South Caroling, and the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
This program is open to all girls and boys. The instructors would especially welcome those wishing to enter competition, as well as, high school ROTC cadets as individuals that do not have a marksmanship program available to them. Meeting time for the program will be on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Newberry Pistol Club indoor range facility.
